Causes

Although there may be no obvious reason causing heartburn, sometimes it’s caused or made worse by:

  • Some anti-inflammatory pain killers (like ibuprofen)
  • Pregnancy
  • Being overweight
  • Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tomatoes, alcohol, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods
  • Smoking
  • Stress and anxiety
  • A hiatus hernia (when part of your stomach moves up into your chest)

Treatments

The most common prescription medication is called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces how much acid your stomach makes. Usually this type of medication is taken for 4-8 weeks, depending on how serious your acid reflux is.
