Macrobid which contains the medication Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) including cystitis.

Who cannot take Macrobid MR?

  • Diabetes
  • Porphyria (A blood disorder)
  • A previous allergic reaction to Nitrofurantoin
  • Severe kidney disease
  • An illness causing severe weakness
  • Vitamin B deficiency

How does Macrobid MR Capsules work?

Nitrofurantoin works by killing bacteria within the urinary tract or bladder that cause UTIs. When Nitrofurantoin is taken the body quickly filters it out your blood into your urine. This is especially useful for a UTI because the medication is concentrated to the site of infection.

Macrobid MR Capsules dosage

The capsules need to be swallowed whole they cannot be chewed, crushed, or opened. To prevent an upset stomach, it is recommended to take Nitrofurantoin with a meal or snack. The capsules are taken twice a day for three days. Ideally the capsules need to be spaced out evenly during the day morning and. The course needs to be completed. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
