Overview

Sumatriptan is a medication used to treat migraines. It belongs to a group of medicines called triptans or serotonin agonist. They are a second line of treatment for migraines when traditional pain relief such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen have little or no beneficial effect on the migraine.

Who cannot take Sumatriptan?

  • Have liver disease or other liver problems.
  • Have high blood pressure.
  • Are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant.
  • Have had a stroke or mini stroke.
  • Have had a previous allergic reaction to Sumatriptan.
  • Have circulation problems in your legs.
  • Have seizures or fits.
  • Breastfeeding
  • Are a heavy smoker or use nicotine replacement therapy.
  • Have heart problems such as coronary heart disease, chest pain (angina), heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias) or have had a heart attack.

How does Sumatriptan Tablets work?

Sumatriptan is specific for migraine headaches. They work by reversing the changes in the brain that may cause migraine headaches. Unfortunately, the causes of migraine are not well known but it does involve temporary changes in the nerves and blood vessels of the brain. During a migraine attack the blood vessels in your brain widen which is believed to cause the migraine process. Sumatriptan works by narrowing these blood vessels reversing the migraine effect.

Sumatriptan Tablets dosage

Sumatriptan works best when you feel the onset of a migraine. It should not be taken during the warning stages which is also known as the “aura stage”. Sumatriptan is taken when the migraine starts and usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to work. A second dose can be taken 2 hours after the first if your migraine improves and then comes back. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
