Who should take Buscopan?  If you have been diagnosed with IBS, your doctor or GP will most often prescribe Buscopan as treatment. It is suitable for most people but be sure to give your prescriber all the information required as some factors can make Buscopan dangerous to consume.   You SHOULD NOT take Buscopan if any of the following applies to you:  You have had a previous allergic reaction to Buscopan You have angle-closure glaucoma  You have an enlarged bowel You have myasthenia gravis   If none of these apply, you are safe to take Buscopan unless your doctor or GP says otherwise.

Overview

Buscopan is a medication used in the management of diagnosed Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is used to relieve the painful cramps and spasms in the gut associated with IBS. Known as an antispasmodic Buscopan is the brand name for the medication hyoscine butylbromide.

Who cannot use Buscopan?

  • If you have an enlarged bowel.
  • If you have had a previous allergic reaction to Buscopan.
  • If you have angle-closure glaucoma.
  • If you have myasthenia gravis.

How does Buscopan Tablets work?

Buscopan relaxes muscles in the intestines, stomach, and bile duct. These muscles are under control of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.  

Buscopan stops the action of this neurotransmitter by blocking specific receptors on the muscle. This results in the relaxation of the muscles in the gut reducing the painful cramps and spasms commonly associated with IBS. 

When the tablet is taken, Buscopan takes around 15 minutes to start working, making it a fast pain relief for people suffering with IBS.  

Buscopan Tablets dosage

Buscopan works quickly and can ease cramps within 15 minutes of taking the medication. Buscopan comes as 10mg tablets and for IBS associated symptoms the usual dosage is 1 tablet three times day; this can be increased to 2 four times a day based upon the prescriber’s advice. Buscopan can be taken either with or after food.
