Finasteride Tablets

Finasteride is licensed for the treatment of androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) in men over the age of 18.

Hair is made in hair follicles. A hair usually lasts for three years and then sheds, a new hair then grows from the hair follicle. As baldness occurs the hair follicle becomes smaller resulting in thinner hair which sheds faster. Over time the hair follicle becomes smaller and smaller resulting in hair not growing out to the skin surface. This is due to the hormone testosterone. Finasteride 1mg tablets work by preventing Testosterone being broken down into its by product which would usually cause the hair follicles to shrink.

Finasteride can be taken with or without food. They are usually taken as a morning dose however it does not matter what time of the day you take the medication providing its at a similar time every day. The tablet should be taken whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication. The medication needs to be taken continuously for 3 – 6months before the benefit is seen and the effects are normally reversed 6 – 12 months after the treatment has been discontinued.
