Marvelon Tablets

Marvelon is a combination birth control pill which contains desogestrel and ethynylestradiol. The two medicines are synthetic derivatives of oestrogen and progesterone. 

Who cannot use Marvelon?

• Have high blood pressure.
• If you have had liver tumours
• If you have had a severe liver disease
• If you have or had angina pectoris
• If you need an operation or are off your feet for a long time
• If you have or had a blood clot
• If you have had a previous allergic reaction to Marvelon
• If you have a disorder affecting blood clotting
• If you have had a heart attack or stroke
• If you have had breast cancer
• If you have or had a migraine called “migraine with aura”.
• If you have severe diabetes with blood vessel damage
• Have a high level of fat in the blood.

Marvelon works by stopping a woman’s egg from developing each menstrual cycle. The egg cannot accept sperm preventing fertilisation from occurring.

Marvelon is a 21 day pill. The first tablet is taken on the first day of your period and is continued for 21 days taking a single tablet daily. After 21 days you then have a 7 day pill free period. During the 7 day pill free period the levels of hormones in the blood will drop causing withdrawal bleeding like a normal menstrual cycle. Start the next pack after the 7 day pill free period even if you are bleeding. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
