Logynon Tablets

Logynon is a contraceptive pill containing two types of female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. They work in combination to prevent pregnancy.  As Logynon causes lighter, more regular, and less painful menstrual bleeding its better suited for women who have painful, heavy and irregular periods.

Who cannot use Logynon?

• Have high blood pressure.
• If you have had liver tumours
• If you have had a severe liver disease
• If you have or had angina pectoris
• If you need an operation or are off your feet for a long time
• If you have or had a blood clot
• If you have had a previous allergic reaction to Logynon
• If you have a disorder affecting blood clotting
• If you have had a heart attack or stroke
• If you have had breast cancer
• If you have or had a migraine called “migraine with aura”.
• If you have severe diabetes with blood vessel damage
• Have a high level of fat in the blood

Oestrogen and progesterone work in three ways to protect against pregnancy. They prevent an egg being released from the ovaries, they make the fluid in the cervix thicker which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb and prevents the lining of the womb thickening enough for an egg to grow in it.

Logynon is a 21 day pill. The first tablet is taken on the first day of your period and is continued for 21 days taking a single tablet daily. After 21 days you then have a 7 day pill free period. During the 7 day pill free period the levels of hormones in the blood will drop causing withdrawal bleeding like a normal menstrual cycle. Start the next pack after the 7 day pill free period even if you are bleeding. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
