Overview

Acetazolamide is used in the prevention and treatment of acute altitude sickness also called acute mountain sickness. It can become a medical emergency if ignored.  Symptoms of altitude sickness usually occur between 6 to 24 hours after reaching altitudes of more than 2500m above sea level. Acetazolamide works on symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, and shortness of breath which can all occur at higher altitudes.

Who cannot use Acetazolamide?

  • Problems with the adrenal glands
  • Have a severe liver disease.
  • If you have had a previous allergic reaction to Acetazolamide
  • Have a severe kidney disease.
  • Low blood levels of sodium and potassium
  • Have metabolic problems.

How does Acetazolamide Tablets work?

Acetazolamide works by acidifying the blood by increasing respiration and arterial oxygenation and thus speeding acclimatisation.

Acetazolamide Tablets dosage

For altitude sickness a typical dose is one 250mg tablet twice a day to be taken before or after a meal. They are usually started 2 days before you start to ascend taken each day while you are ascending and a day after you have reached your highest altitude. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
