Acetazolamide is used in the prevention and treatment of acute altitude sickness also called acute mountain sickness. It can become a medical emergency if ignored.  Symptoms of altitude sickness usually occur between 6 to 24 hours after reaching altitudes of more than 2500m above sea level. Acetazolamide works on symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, and shortness of breath which can all occur at higher altitudes.
